July 30, 2015-Breakfast at Two Sisters Bakery, Seldovia Wildlife Tour/Whales and Seldovia, dinner at Captain Pattie's Fish House

HOMER

Another lovely morning.  We drive over to TWO SISTERS BAKERY for breakfast.  I have a mixed berry danish and Richard has a vegetable pesto savory.  2 cups of coffee.  Bill $10.20  You go up to the counter to place your order, you pick it up, get your own coffee.  Return your dishes when you're done.

Lots of choices

A quick drive over to the marina as Richard's fishing trip is tomorrow.  We go to the Central Charters & Tours Office.  I pre booked Richard's fishing trip with Alaska Coastal Marine but I guess this is all the same outfit.  Anyway we pay for his fishing license for tomorrow $20.  I also book us for the Seldovia Wildlife Tour which leaves today at 10:30 am.  Cost $49 pp senior rate.  We return to our hotel, get my camera gear and back to the Spit-slip F-1 which is below Coal Point Processing.  Our boat is the Discovery.  She holds 75 passengers max.  The captain is Victoria who is English.  There are 2 helpers-Madeline and Makayla.  This will prove to be one of the best for your money tours we will take while in Alaska.  We go by Gull Island-sea birds-60' rock.  A smaller rookery.  Otters.  The Eldred Passage.  We will see Elephant Rock with its trunk down.  Then the captain swings the boat around and Elephant Rock is now seen with its trunk up!  We see lots of whales-humpbacks.  Mom and baby.

Arriving Seldovia

Soon we reach the town of Seldovia.  Due to all the whale activity that we stopped for we will have 2 hours in town instead of 3.  Richard and I are feeling a bit hungry-must be the sea air!  We stop at the LINWOOD  GRILL for drinks and 2 orders of tortilla soup.  We decide to eat outside on the deck overlooking the water.  It's chilly but with the sun it feels nice.  That soup hit the spot.  Normally Richard and I don't eat lunch.  Maybe something to do with age??  Bill is $18 with tip.  We don't have much time left to explore so I buy some stamps at the post office and we just walk.  We head up a path to the Russian Orthodox Church.  We pass a park of sorts, the visitor center.  Not enough time to walk along the boardwalk or over to the Slough Bridge.  I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to visit the Seldovia Village Tribe Visitor Center.

Almost there

We're here!

The boat's horn sounds so we return to board for our trip back to Homer.  On the return we see more otters, black oyster catchers, bald eagles, and whales.  We arrive back to Homer around 4:30-5:00 pm.  This was a great trip through Katchemak Bay and over to Seldovia.  I highly recommend this.

Back to Homer

We walk around the Spit area a bit checking out the shops.  Then it's time to think about dinner.  Since we are here on the Spit we head to CAPTAIN PATTIE'S FISH HOUSE.  We are lucky to be seated in no time.  It's busy but it's a good sized restaurant.  Everything on the menu sounds great.  I order Kachemak Bay oysters to start-a must have per my research.  I am brave and eat one oyster!  2 cups of clam chowder.   Char grilled halibut with wild rice which we split.  The halibut comes with a salad but we order an extra one.  Dessert-Key lime pie.  A great meal!  Bill $80 with tip.

A bit more browsing in the shops, stop to watch fishing at the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon,  a stop at Safeway on our drive back to the hotel.  Richard gets himself some orange juice, a bagel, and some cream cheese for his breakfast tomorrow before his fishing trip.
