ZAANDAM
Today is just a
sea day. For
breakfast I want to go to the
Rotterdam Dining Room where you are seated at a table, either by yourself or with others if you prefer. You order from a menu. We are seated with others next to a window with a view to the sea. Richard orders an omelet with hash brown patties and toast. I get the fruit plate and I ask for one blueberry pancake as I'm remembering that pancake in Anchorage/Snow City Cafe. Alas, the pancakes are normal size so I could have ordered more but I'm ok with what I have. The coffee is good as is the rest of the food. I personally prefer the Rotterdam. My husband likes the Lido buffet.
Richard goes to a
cooking demonstration while I go to the
self service laundry. Richard gets me quarters from the front desk. I finish and get to the end of the cooking demonstration but in time to sample the tiramisu. Yummy!! Richard has several pages/directions of what was cooked. Then we decide to head to the
Lido pool. There are a lot of kids splashing and jumping in the pool so Richard decides not to swim. He will not swim or use the hot tubs the rest of our cruise. I spend time in the
hot tub which feels good on my back/shoulders and is so relaxing.

I go on deck to take some pictures but it is rainy-not a nice day to be outside. I return without taking any pictures. The wind has gone from 4 knots yesterday to 31 knots today. No one is outside. I find out later that the swells are around 8' and later there is taping put up across the doors leading to the outside decks. I guess it's not safe to be outside at this time.
Tonight is a
gala evening, the first of two we have on this cruise. It's also the
Captain's Welcome Toast. We get dressed up and proceed to the
Mondriann Lounge. The ship's live shows take place here. Tier seating so everyone has a good view of the stage. Champagne is passed out. Cruise director Sarah introduces Captain PJ van Maurik. He, in turn, introduces representatives of other ship's departments like shore excursions & shopping, the engine room, the dining/culinary, etc. There's also one employee chosen to represent all the stewards and other behind the scenes workers. It was nice and the Captain has a sense of humor! We all drink a toast to all and to having a great cruise.

For
dinner I want to go to the
Rotterdam Dining Room. As we approach there is the photographer to take our pictures in our gala attire. From the menu I choose the pineapple boat as my starter. Richard-cold seared scallops with avocado puree. We both opt for the mixed greens salad. My entree is the baked ricotta stuffed shells. Richard makes a good choice with the yellowfin sole fillet with a potato gallete and green beans. Dessert-balsamic strawberries with white chocolate mousse and chocolate souffle. It was a very tasty meal. I feel great!
